Thanksgiving around the World

Everday this week our class will visit another country and learn about how they give thanks.  On Monday we visited Ghana, Africa and learned about the Homowo Festival.  We made rainsticks which are used in music and dancing.  We also tried a bite of candied yams.

Pumpkin Carving

This week the students brought pumpkins to school and we carved them together in class.  They had a blast.  Some were hesitant about reaching into the pumpkin to grab the seeds.  All of the students ended up having a good time and the pumpkins turned out great.  Thanks to all of the parents who volunteered and helped students carve pumpkins.

Firefighters

October 6th - October 12th was Fire Prevention week so a few of the Firefighters from Lytle came by to talk with the students.  They talked to the students about what they should do if they are ever in a fire, calling 911 and about Stop, Drop, and Roll.  They also brought one of the Engines with them so we could see the different tools they use.

How can we change the World

Students from the Lytle High School stopped by today to help first grade students brainstorm on how we can change the world and make an impact.  First grade students discussed and then drew pictures about how they can help others.  Thank You Lauren and Tabitha for brainstorming with us!!!

Rocks and Cookies

This week we are learning about rocks.  Students went on a nature walk on the playground to find unique rocks.  We are identifying, looking at them under a magnifying glass and also learning what rocks are made of.  Today we grouped with another class and baked cookies.  This activity allowed the students to see how rocks are made.  We used ingredients(minerals) to make cookie dough.  We then used heat to complete the cookie(rock forming) process.
